Designing an Efficient and Aesthetic Laundry Room

Did you know that the average household does about 50lbs of laundry per week? That is a massive amount of laundry, which means there is likely an abundance of time spent in a laundry room. That is why I have always been a firm believer that laundry rooms should not only function well for their household, but they should be aesthetic as well because.. shouldn’t everything? Here are 5 tips for how to design an efficient and aesthetic laundry room.

1. What are your needs? With any project, I always begin with space planning, but before I can begin space planning, I need a good representation of my client’s needs. Do you need hanging space? Folding space? Storage space? Do you prefer a laundry shoot? All of these things will be taken into consideration when mapping out the plan for your new laundry room.
2. Space planning. Now that we’ve determined what your most essential needs are to function properly in your laundry room, we need to map it out. With accurate measurements of what your laundry room is, or will become, it is time to map out the space to scale. Doing this helps us to recognize any. measurement discrepancies, forgotten details, and also to help discover creative ways to function for all of your needs.

3. Determine your aesthetic. Once your space is all mapped out, and you are ready to start renovating, what is your design aesthetic and how will you work it into the functionality of your laundry room? Whether you have to take to Pinterest or Instagram to find cutting edge design ideas, now is the time to choose all of your finishes (what I like to call the fun part)!

4. Execute. You’ve mapped out your space, you’ve chosen all your design finishes, now it is time to execute your design! Do you plan to DIY this space or call in the professionals? Either way, make sure you have a good set of hands on the job to make sure you get it right!

5. Organize. Now that your room is finished, it’s time to go in and load it up with all of your laundry doing faves. To add to the aesthetic of the space while maintaining function, think about how you can work your everyday use items into the design. Can you pour your detergents into more aesthetic containers? Can you find an aesthetic way to display dryer balls and fabric softener? Maybe even the art work can serve a function by providing information for how to remove stains! Whatever your main function is, there’s always a way to make it aesthetic.
